Coloured pencil study, from a photograph. Around 30 minutes.
The "context" was rushed... I just wanted to suggest something. Also, I made it up... and on second thoughts, I think this little lady might be happier perched HIGH... Oh well.
I once spent a VERY happy ten minutes watching one of these beautiful birds on the University of York campus lake of all places! They are especially beautiful in flight... watching one dive is just AWESOME.

i love the little fellow... lady.... birdie. but again, you're very fond of mid-tones. don't be scared of shading and shadows. they're the quick way to give emphasis and to make with the 3D-ness.
